GIRLS ADVOCACY ALLIANCE

THE STORY.

For millions of girls in the world equal rights and opportunities are not guaranteed. The Girls Advocacy Alliance, consisting of multiple NGO’s, is trying to change that. But how does social change happen? And how do new social norms emerge in societies? To answer these questions, we need to understand how power and systems shape change.

In this three-part series called The Journey to Change we follow three women who investigate how to influence positive change for girls and women in emerging societies with three specific cases. In Ghana, Nana delves into the road to end child marriage. In Uganda, Lindsey investigates the road to safer workplaces for women. And in the Philippines, Marla looks into the road to end gender-based violence. Each a unique story, but with with much overlap on the approach towards more equal rights for girls and women.

THE PRODUCTION.

For this production I was asked by Makmende Media, a production house that tells stories from all over the world for NGOs and development organizations. They mainly work with local film talent, which requires a unique approach and collaboration. For example, I directed the three local film crews remotely, which brought both advantages and new challenges. The biggest challenge turned out to be the streamlining of the three episodes in both form and content in order to edit it into one overarching series.

The videos were used to engage and motivate policy makers, donors and supporters on an event. Showing real personal stories is a beautiful way to make people understand the situation and subject. With these three different stories a clear context for a discussion was set.
