NOG ÉÉN WEEK
THE STORY.
In the documentary series Nog Eén Week (One More Week), children between the ages of 10 and 13 are followed in the week before an exciting event. An event that turns life upside down. How do they deal with that?
In the third season I met and followed Jurian from Urk, a fishing village in the Netherlands. Jurian (13) comes from a large fishing family. He himself is also thinking about becoming a fisherman, but he has his doubts. About the work, the seasickness and the rules on board. I followed him in the week before his first sea voyage with his father on the North Sea. In the fourth season, I followed Julie (12) in the preparations for her first major national kickboxing match. A girl in a boy's world who knows how to handle herself just fine.

THE PRODUCTION.
Where adults often speak through a layer of self-consciousness and social inhibition, children speak straight from their hearts – raw, honest and direct. They dream out loud, ask questions that adults don’t dare to ask, and fearlessly walk through the world as if anything is possible. It is precisely that open-mindedness that makes it so special. I noticed this clearly when following Jurian and Julie. Once I had gained trust with them, they let me into their world and even came up with ideas for scenes and shooting styles themselves. That kind of courage and open-mindedness is what I often think of in productions with adults.
