SHORT DICK MAN

THE STORY.

The penis is the crown jewel of every man. It seems that size is important and that a small penis detracts from masculinity and attractiveness. And everyone knows that the quickest way to get a man on edge is to make a joke about his genitals. In Short Dick Man, Matthijs investigates why he has been plagued his entire life by the crippling insecurity about the size of his penis. He avoids places like urinals and changing rooms and doesn’t dare to walk around in swimming trunks on a hot summer day. He only wears loose clothing, refrains from using any dating apps and always gives a disclaimer beforehand when he has sexual contact. How did this insecurity come to play such a defining role in his life and, more importantly, how does he get rid of it?

Short Dick Man takes you along in Matthijs’ ultimate attempt at self-acceptance; he seeks treatment from a psychologist, relives the memories that contributed to his insecurity and seeks confrontation. In these situations and conversations, Matthijs tries to break the taboo surrounding the penis and free himself from the suffocating boxes of masculinity and sexuality. And perhaps, this film is the last disclaimer he will every have to give.

THE PRODUCTION.

Short Dick Man is one of the most intimate and vulnerable stories I was able to be part of. The film was initiated by Matthijs in an attempt to finally get rid of his insecurity. Over the course of two years we wrote pitch decks, applied for funding together with our producer, we shot and we edited. The film eventually premiered at the Roze Filmdagen Amsterdam, the largest LGBTQI+ film festival in the Netherlands.

My role
Matthijs and I often formed a two-man band during the production phase. This guaranteed an intimate setting and a sense of freedom while shooting. I took on the role of directing cameraman during production phase, and worked as an editor during post-production. All in close collaboration with Matthijs and the rest of the team.

“It’s not the size of the boat, but the motion of the ocean,”
is the well-known cliché. However well-intentioned, this is not the conviction of many men. The penis is a crown jewel, a totem of male pride, provided you have been generously endowed or at least fit within the norm.
