THE WESTERNERS
THE STORY.
In many places outside the Western world, we aren’t liked very much. They don't care about our ideals. How come we don't all pursue the same thing? In this travel series, uninhibited Westerners curiously step into the world of their peers in a completely different culture, where they are not waiting for our values and standards. What is their story and what do they think of us?
De Westerlingen (translated to The Westerners) step out of their own comfort zone, into someone else's universe elsewhere. With an open mind, sharpness, empathy and humor, they hang out with people who really have a completely different view of life. They meet people who have a lot to say about Western ideals such as democracy, freedom of religion, women's emancipation or animal welfare. This leads to astonishing insights and confrontations with other truths, against which their own prejudices can be tested and perhaps even revised.
THE PRODUCTION.
For this series, I stood in front of the camera for the first (and only) time instead of behind it. And although that didn't feel natural, or tasted like more, I still managed to make the best of it with director Jack Valkering. Together we went to Lebanon for my episode, a country that had adopted about one and a half million refugees from neighbouring Syria. We investigated why many of them don't even think about moving to Europe, while others returned after a stay in our free West didn't suit them.
